• W2996640859 abstract "The present thesis concentrates on goal striving in the realm of personal goals and is dedicated to the investigation on antecedents (Part I) and consequences (Part II) of approach and avoidance motivation in personal goals within work and private life domains.In Part I, two longitudinal studies, one scenario experiment and one online-experiment reveal that a large amount of resources affects the adoption of approach goals. Furthermore, this relationship is mediated by the participants’ outcome expectancy. In Part II, two longitudinal studies and one scenario-study demonstrate that avoidance goal striving in work and private life domains and affective self-control are related to enhanced goal conflict within these life domains. Increased goal conflict, in turn, leads to impairment of performance and well-being. The results of the seven studies have important theoretical implications. First, they complement existing findings on antecedents of approach and avoidance goal selection. Thereby the amount of resources is highlighted as an important determinant that predicts the individual change of approach and avoidance goal selection. In addition, they pinpoint to outcome expectancy as a mediating mechanism of the relationship between resources and approach versus avoidance goal adoption. Second, they reveal that avoidance goals and affective self-control account for increased goal conflict within work and private life domain. Finally, it is demonstrated that goal conflict not only impairs well-being but also performance.Die vorliegende Dissertation untersucht vorauslaufende Bedingungen (Teil I) und Konsequenzen (Teil II) der Annaherungs- und Vermeidungsmotivation bei personlichen Zielen aus dem beruflichen und privaten Lebenskontext.In Teil I weisen die Ergebnisse zweier langsschnittlicher Studien, eines Szenario-Experiment und eines Online-Experiments darauf hin, dass eine hohe Verfugbarkeit personlicher Ressourcen die Wahl von Annaherungszielen vorhersagt. Dieser Zusammenhang wird durch die subjektive Erfolgserwartung mediiert. In Teil II verdeutlichen die Resultate zweier langsschnittlicher Studien und eines Szenario-Experiments, dass sowohl das Streben nach beruflichen und freizeitbezogenen Vermeidungszielen als auch affektive Selbstkontrolle mit erhohtem Zielkonflikt zwischen beruflichem und privatem Lebenskontext assoziiert sind. Erhohter Zielkonflikt wiederum fuhrt zu Leistungs- und Befindenseinbussen. Die Ergebnisse haben wichtige theoretische Implikationen. Zum einen erganzen sie bestehende Befunde aus der Forschung zu Antezedenzen der Annaherungs- und Vermeidungszielwahl. Die Hohe verfugbarer Ressourcen wird als eine wichtige Determinante eingefuhrt, welche individuelle Veranderungen bei der Wahl von Annaherungs- und Vermeidungszielen vorhersagt. Dieser Zusammenhang wird mit der ressourcenabhangig variierenden Erfolgserwartung erklart.
