- W2996886536 abstract "The purpose of the article is to study linguistic-stylistic peculiarities of portrait descriptions of Afro-American women in literature works; to determine main regularities and principles that are used by creation of portrait descriptions in analyzed short stories; to make out the typical features of Afro-American collective (ethnic, social, gender (female)) identity. The object of analysis is the portrait of Afro-American woman as one of components of the fiction text and the form of creation of the integral image of the literature character — the black woman in the USA — as the central textual category. The subject of the investigation is lexical means of creation of a character’s image, actualized stylistic devices: epithet, metaphor, comparison — in Afro-American woman’s portrait characteristics and the frequency of their use in fiction texts. A special attention is paid to graphon as the device of transfer of a character’s speech portrait. As a result of the investigation carried out, a number of conclusions were made. In particular, the Afro-American woman in the USA, as a representative of the given ethnic group, is a relevant speaker of the Afro-American version of the English language. In the analyzed short stories she, as usual, appears as a non-educated woman of a low social status, that finds reflection in her speech in numerous graphons. Most of lexical units, used in the texts by creation of a portrait image, contain the emotional-appraising component, that is realized in the text by using of adjectives and adverbs mostly appearing as epithets. Practical use of the results of the investigation lies in the necessity of their use by the systematic approach to studying of a structural unit of the fiction whole — the portrait — from the linguistic point of view. This will allow to make fuller conclusions on the kind of system connections in a literature work." @default.
