- W2998259647 abstract "Cherts, specifically Precambrian cherts, are fine-grained rocks consisting dominantly or entirely of SiO2 in the form of microcrystalline quartz, subordinate megaquartz, and (rarely) chalcedonic quartz. Cherts may be chemical precipitates, or they may be replacements of preexisting carbonates, volcanoclastic sediments, or igneous and metamorphic rocks. The silica cycle in the Precambrian was dominated by inorganic processes, because siliceous microorganisms, which control the silica concentration of the modern ocean at values of 1–15 ppm, were not present during much or all of the Precambrian, allowing the silica concentration of the Precambrian ocean to reach values of 60 ppm or more. Thus, it appears probable that many Precambrian cherts precipitated directly from seawater as gels or crystals by mechanisms that are difficult to reconstruct in detail. The texture and mode of formation of Precambrian cherts make them a uniquely suitable medium for preservation of early life forms. One fruitful approach to reconstructing the sedimentary and diagenetic history of Precambrian cherts (and chert-bearing rocks such as iron formation) is to study the isotopic composition of their constituent elements: oxygen, silicon, iron, and hydrogen. Advances in precision and availability of isotopic analyses together with rare earth element chemistry have produced a large and rapidly increasing body of geochemical data that provides constraints on mechanisms of chert formation and inter alia on geochemical processes and environmental conditions on the Precambrian Earth." @default.
