- W2999060312 abstract "Averrhoa bilimbi as the herbs contains tannin, a bioactive compound that commonly used as an antioxidant in the pharmaceutical industry. Several methods were used to extract tannin from natural resources such as maceration and soxhlet extraction. The modeling of tannin mass transfer in Averrhoa bilimbi leaf extraction are essentials to obtain the optimal condition. The interaction of extraction time and solid/liquid ratio on tannin content were studied using Box-Behnken design. The fresh leaves of Averrhoa bilimbi were extracted by ethanol and the mixture of ethanol-water of 90/10 and 80/20 (v/v). Extraction was carried out at soxhlet apparatus by continuous extraction, solid to liquid ratios were 1/20, 1/30, 1/40, 1/50 and 1/60 (w/v), the temperature was maintained at 80-90 °C and extraction time was varied at 30, 60, 120, 240, and 480 minutes. The highest tannin content for ethanol as a solvent was obtained 56.748 kg/m3 at 480 minutes and 1/30 (w/v) solid to liquid ratio. Meanwhile, the highest tannin content was reached 58.066 kg/m3 and 58.819 kg/m3 at 30 minutes of extraction for both ethanol-water ratios. The model used Box-Behnken design showed that the contribution of the quadratic model was significant for all the responses. The tannin content obtained 51.208 kg/m3 at optimal condition, it was found at 255 °C and solid to liquid ratio 1/30 using ethanol as a solvent. Extraction time and solid to liquid ratio showed an interaction and the model was significant (p < 0.05). Hence, this study demonstrated that extraction time and solid to liquid ratio affected the extract tannin content." @default.
