- W2999994006 abstract "ABSTRACT Introduction Precise staging of malignant disease is crucial for optimal therapeutic strategy. Besides endoscopic methods, ultrasonography, CT and PET are the most often methods used to stage the disease. However differences between preoperative staging and intraoperative respective histopathological findings are still found. This is valid for both primary disease and recurrences. The aim of this work was to evaluate the correctness of preoperative PET and CT imaging correlated with intraoperative surgical findings and definitive histopathological assessment of suspected lesions in patients with primary or recurrent colorectal cancer. Methods Prospective clinical study included 185 patients with colorectal cancer operated in Masaryk Memorial Cancer Center between years 2005 – 2010. Four anatomic regions were used to evaluate the cancer deposits – primary tumor, liver metastases, abdominal metastases and pelvic metastases. Results 287 intraoperative found and histologically verified cancer deposits were evaluated. There were 128 primary tumors, 78 liver metastases, 49 abdominal metastases and 32 pelvic metastases. Low percentage of false positive findings were noticed in liver (7%) and pelvic deposits (3%). High percentage of false negative findings were found in liver (41%) and abdominal deposits (31%). Conclusion Combination of CT and PET imaging brings correct diagnostics especially for abdominal (87% correct diagnostics) and pelvic (92% correct diagnostic) colorectal cancer metastases. Primary tumors were diagnosed correctly in 85% and liver metastases in 81% of cases. However, method combination does not increase correct diagnostics rates of separated screenings." @default.
