- W3000017528 abstract "Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been used in wide range of biomedical applications such as disease diagnosing, contrast agents in MRI, drug delivery and hyperthermia. Hyperthermia has been considered as one of the adjuvant therapeutic modalities for treating both localized and deep-seated tumor cells by heating them within the temperature range of 42–45 °C. Hyperthermia using MNPs is used alone or in combination with other therapeutic modalities. The advantage of MNPs is that they can be directly injected into the tumors and when place in an alternating magnetic field, heat is generated that lead to severe thermal shock and eventually to apoptotic/necrotic cell death. In this chapter, an overview of cancer and the existing therapies are given along with different types of magnetic nanostructures and the heat generation process of MNPs. The chapter also discusses magnetic hyperthermia in combination with other therapeutic modalities." @default.
