- W300056197 abstract "Project Synergy focuses on the higher education needs of the largely Hispanic, predominantly low-income South Bay area of San Diego County. It is a cooperative venture of three institutions: Southwestern College, San Diego State University and Sweetwater Union High School District. The partnership has as its aim a seamless education begun at Southwestern and finished under the auspices of San Diego State in jointly operated facilities: Project Synergy. The Compact for Success, a partnership between San Diego State and Sweetwater Union High School District, aims to provide students with the motivation and strong intellectual background to succeed in higher education in general and at San Diego State in particular. The ultimate aim of these two initiatives is to create an opportunity for every seventh grader in the South Bay region to be prepared for and to succeed in getting an education at the college level. These two partnerships complement one another, and both are needed to provide for the higher education needs of this rapidly growing area. The Partners in Project Synergy and the Compact for Success Sweetwater Union High School District is California's largest secondary and most diverse district with 35,500 students enrolled in 25 middle schools, junior high schools and high schools in San Diego's South Bay area reaching to the border with Mexico. In addition, Sweetwater has 34,000 adult learners attending four adult schools. Southwestern College, one of California's 106 public community colleges, the only postsecondary educational institution in South San Diego County, enrolls approximately 17,000 students. These students are typically engaged in the traditional first two years of a university education and working toward their AA degree or are preparing to enter occupational careers or are pursuing additional learning for its own sake. San Diego State is the oldest and largest higher education institution in the San Diego region, offering bachelor's degrees in 76 areas, master's degrees in 58 areas and doctorates in 13 areas. With more than 34,000 students, SDSU is the second largest university in California. The Two Threads The initiative to meet the complex needs of the South Bay region of San Diego County comes together out of two separate threads. The first is a collaboration between Southwestern College and San Diego State, which gave rise to the Higher Education Center in National City and is expanding to a partnership in the Otay Mesa Campus. This has now expanded into Project Synergy. The second thread is the Compact for Success, a partnership between San Diego State and the Sweetwater District. The First Thread Creation of centers for education that lie within the different communities of the South Bay area of San Diego is part of the thrust of Southwestern to provide convenient access to college-level education to the citizens of the community. At the same time, this partnership serves to reduce crowding at the main Southwestern College campus. The Higher Education Center at National City is the second off-campus center for Southwestern College; the first was the Center at San Ysidro, which was started a decade earlier. The Higher Education Center (HEC) at National City was established to provide lower- and upper-division courses to South County residents through a partnership between Southwestern College and San Diego State. The grand opening of the building at 701 National City Boulevard was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 26, 2998. The Center now consists of two buildings and will soon be opening a third. San Diego State's reasons for joining Southwestern College in the HEC were similar to Southwestern's reasons. SDSU's main campus is reaching its physical capacity. Partnering with Southwestern College in the HEC is a means both to reduce congestion at the main campus and to reach out to the citizens of the South Bay area, providing them with upper-division and graduate work that complements the lower-division college courses provided by Southwestern College. …" @default.
