- W3000885554 abstract "Abstract The magnesium ion plays an important role in the development of bone in animals and humans. It is also involved in a large number of metabolic reactions. Therefore, there is a strong rationale behind development of magnesium-substituted hydroxyapatite (Mg-HA). This chapter introduces important techniques used for synthesis of Mg-HA, which include wet-chemical routes and solid-state methods. Key characterization data related to Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman spectroscopy have also been discussed. Mg-HA has been reported to have antibacterial properties, and this chapter provides some insight into its antibacterial properties. Furthermore, this chapter also introduces the reader to use of cells to assess biological activity of Mg-HA. This then leads to the introduction of key animal models that have been used to assess in vivo performance of Mg-HA and related apatitic materials." @default.
