- W3001813204 abstract "This project deals with the concept of prudence developed by Adam Smith and its relevance for moral philosophy and neuroscience. The first chapter analyses prudence in Smith’s works, the moral psychology ofSmith’s agent, the system of virtues to which prudence belongs, the different interpretations of scholars regarding Smith’s prudence, and the philosophical context in which Smith elaborates his concept of prudence. From this analysis, itemergesthat Smith’s prudence is relevant in moral philosophybecause it represents a good contribution to the debates on the relationship between the self and the other, the interaction between partiality and impartiality in a moral theory, and the relation between the economic and the moral sides of the agent. The second chapter connects the components of Smith’s prudence with several neurobiological and behavioural phenomena, in order to show, firstly, the compatibility and similarity between the Smithian and the neuroscientific perspectivesand, secondly, the worth of the components of Smith’s prudence for the study of the corresponding neurobiological or behavioural phenomena. In fact, the components of Smith’s prudence can enhance the understanding of those phenomena, by providing interesting interpretations ofthe data and suggesting new experimental hypotheses. This chapter also provides quantitative and systematic evidence for the brain areas that activate when a component of Smith’s prudence is involved. The third chapter consists in the elaboration of an updated theory of prudence that is inspired by Smith’s account of prudence and is in line with the neuroscientific studies on decision-making. The updated theory of prudence represents a framework that explains and unifies the neurobiological and behavioural phenomena that correspond to the components of Smith’s prudence. This chapter shows the worth of the updated theory of prudence for the investigation of human decision-making both in neuroscience and in moral philosophy, and, on the basis of this theory,it outlines a normative updated theory of prudence with a sound empirical foundation." @default.
