- W3002795415 abstract "In the forensic practice, an identified bullet may be tracked back to a weapon. Sequentially, the weapon may be linked to its owner and the owner to a crime scene. This study reports a case of bullet profiling in vivo by means of computed tomography (CT), followed by postmortem validation via autopsy. The case describes a victim that became paraplegic after being shot during confrontation with police officers. Three shots were confirmed – two from a .38 Smith & Wesson caliber revolver and one from a .40 Smith & Wesson caliber pistol, one of them hit the victim. Judicial request was made to find out from which firearm the bullet that hit the victim came from. Radiographs of the victim showed a bullet lodged next to the 12th thoracic (T12) vertebra. In axial, coronal and sagittal CT views the mean diameter of the bullet was 20.8mm, 17.9mm and 8.6, respectively. The quantitative and qualitative information indicated that the image was more compatible with a .38 round non-jacketed lead bullet. Two years after CT analysis, the victim died in prison. During the autopsy, the bullet was confirmed as a .38 SPECIAL round non-jacketed lead type. CT figured as an optimal tool to realistically measure 1:1. Because of the inherent image artifacts caused by the metal components of the object, however, CT should not be used as sole tool for bullet profiling. Experience with the behavior of deformation of bullets may improve the outcomes of profiling." @default.
