- W3003679427 abstract "A total of 33 participants living in Dabadou and Tenkelen, two rural villages in Region Kankan, Guinea, have been interviewed through semi-structured questionnaires in 2013 before raising consciousness. 51.5% (17/33) of participants thought that FGM was a good practice, only 27% (9/33) were against it. Only 24.2% (8/33) wanted to abandon the practice. 97% (32/33) of participants declared that FGM is still practiced in their region, only 27.3% (9/33) had knowledge of a Guinean law that forbids it. Most of them declared that FGM was done by a traditional excisor, 36.4% (12/33) declared that the practice was also done by medical staff. Mothers and “aunties” were indicated as the main decision makers regarding FGM. In 57.6% of cases, tradition was given as the main reason. None of the respondents (0/33) indicated that the daughter was consulted or informed about the upcoming FGM. Negative consequences of FGM were revealed by 24.2% (8/33) of our participants, but only 18% out of them declared they will not force their own daughter. Our results are quite similar to the last national DHS/MICS questionnaire. This year, we are going to conduct a study to evaluate our 5 year awareness campaign in both villages.
