- W3004009074 abstract "Introduction As levels of migration increase, healthcare providers in ‘destination’ countries must find effective ways to respond to the needs of communities practising FGM/C. This paper reports a systematic review of qualitative evidence (funded by the UK National Institute of Health Research) to explore the experiences, needs, barriers and facilitators to providing FGM-related healthcare in high income (OECD) countries, from health professionals’ perspectives. Methods Twelve databases and grey literature sources were searched. Papers were screened, selected and quality appraised by two independent reviewers using the JBI QARI tool. Data was extracted using a JBI tool. Synthesis involved inductive thematic analysis of study findings. Findings 32 papers from 10 different countries were included (78% conducted in the last decade). There were 18 descriptive themes summarised into 6 analytical themes relating to: knowledge; communication; cultural (mis)understandings; organisation of care; clinical management; and service provision. Together, these overarching themes illuminate complex ways in which care experiences and clinical outcomes are linked to levels of provider confidence/ competence, cultural misunderstandings and particular organisational processes. Conclusion The review suggests a need for provider training, clear guidelines and care pathways and specialist FGM/C centres to support mainstream services.
