In vitro and in vivo bioassays are based on simple physiological responses that allow a comparison of the inducing potential of chemical substances with molecules of proven biostimulant activity. The ideal biological screening process just described can be complicated by the fact that the activity of a biostimulant may not be explained by the presence of any individual constituent, but is a result of the synergy of different constituents in the complex. The evidences emerged from acid growth tests suggest the application of the method for the study of biostimulants such as humic substances to check their ability to stimulate plant proton pumps and promote root growth through an auxin activity. The technologies reported in several scientific papers represent proved concepts of the efforts needed for a deep characterization, at different levels, of biostimulants/bioactives mode of action." @default.
