- W3006479947 abstract "Abstract The optimum CA and MA storage regimes, which result in maximum storage periods for most fruits and vegetables are well established, but comparison of genotype (cultivar) effects on these regimes is largely unknown for most products. Typically, commercial conditions are established with atmospheres that encompass wide “safety” limits for O2 and CO2 that maximize benefits without incurring risk of anaerobic conditions. The product has to fit the technology, rather than the other way around, and cultivars of any product that do not perform are not stored under CA/MA conditions. The important exception to this rule are apples, and to a lesser extent pears, because the number of cultivars is so large and the need to maximize storage periods over many months to market the fruit is so critical. The application of new technologies such as DCA, which push the boundaries of lower O2 limits, is ongoing. While most information about the underlying physiological and biochemical principles underlying the responses of cultivars to CA/MA storage conditions is focused on apple, extension of such investigations across a broader range of products is needed. Also, greater emphasis by plant breeder to select cultivars with desirable responses to CA/MA earlier in the selection process is needed." @default.
