- W3006915130 abstract "Imipenem–cilastatin (IPM-CS) is used as an embolic material in embolization for osteoarthritis; however, in vivo characteristics of IPM-CS have not been rigorously assessed. The purpose of this study was to elucidate in vivo temporal characteristics of IPM-CS particles as an embolic agent using rat renal arteries. Seventeen male Sprague-Dawley rats (460.2 ± 45.0g) were used. Unilateral renal artery embolization was performed using IPM-CS (n = 12) or Embozene (n = 5) until complete stasis in the main renal artery was achieved. Follow-up angiography was performed 48 hours after embolization. Four rats underwent bilateral renal embolization using IPM-CS on one kidney and Embozene on the other kidney in an acute study. Sequential angiography up to 4 hours postembolization was performed to assess relative changes in flow. Kidneys were harvested for macroscopic and histologic assessment. Technical failure occurred in one rat in the IPM-CS group due to renal artery dissection, and one rat died before embolization in the Embozene group. The following characteristics were observed for the IPM-CS group at 48 hours postembolization: complete recanalization (n = 2); near-complete recanalization with slight parenchymal enhancement defects (n = 4); main artery recanalization with patchy parenchymal enhancement defects (n = 5). On gross inspection, harvested kidneys all demonstrated surface blanching (11/11) compared to control kidneys. In the Embozene group persistent embolization of the main renal artery was observed in all cases without recanalization at 48 hours (4/4). Sequential angiography up to 4 hours after embolization with IPM-CS showed gradual recanalization of renal artery branches with partial parenchymal enhancement in all cases (4/4). In vivo evaluation of the temporal embolic characteristics of IPM-CS shows unique recanalization properties relative to conventional embolic materials. This feature may underlie the demonstrated clinical safety and efficacy of this material in embolization of hyperemic tissue in osteoarthritis. Histologic analysis will correlate microscopic ischemic changes with that seen at angiography." @default.
