Thesis: English Department of Faculty of Cultural Sciences. Universitas Sebelas Maret. This research is conducted to analyze the indirect order expression employed by the characters in the movie entitled “Divergent”. There are three main points discussed.in this research. The first point is the types of indirect order expression found in the movie entitled “Divergent”. Thus, the second point is the way of the speaker in uttering an indirect order expression in the movie entitled “Divergent”. And the last point is the reason of the speaker in uttering an indirect order expression in the movie entitled “Divergent”. This research employs Pragmatics Approach to analyze the indirect order expression found in the movie entitled “Divergent”. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. In addition, this research employs case study methodology. In total there are 40 data of indirect order expression are analyzed by Ervin Tripp’s theory of directive speech act. The findings of this research contain three results that answered the research questions. The first result is there are four types of indirect order expression as follows: Need Statement, Permission Directives, Non Explicit Question Directives, and Hints. The characters in the movie entitled “Divergent” mostly use Hints type in uttering indirect order expressions. The second result is the characters in the movie entitled “Divergent” mostly use low boundary intonation in uttering indirect order expressions. Their body languages and face expressions are also changing while uttering indirect order expressions. Most of the characters show serious expressions in uttering indirect order expressions. And the last result is characters in the movie entitled “Divergent” aim to make the hearer to do or not to do something for the speaker. The indirect order expressions are mostly used by the female characters in the movie entitled “Divergent”. This research is hoped to be beneficial for the readers and the other researchers concerning in indirect order expression. It is suggested to other researchers to conduct same research using Ervin Tripp’s classification of directive speech act and other source of data such as non-fictitious products (talk show, speech and many more)." @default.
