- W3007510122 abstract "Abstract Although people experience negative affect when witnessing or experiencing unfair events, the degree of such affect can vary widely. The current research tests a six-item inventory designed to assess such emotional responses: The Emotional Response to Unfairness (ERU) Scale. Five pilot studies and five primary studies utilized 955 participants recruited from a college campus, from Amazon's Mechanical Turk, and from the sidewalk of an urban street. The ERU scale manifested satisfactory inter-item reliability, manifested a single-factor structure, manifested acceptable test-retest reliability, and correlated with conceptually similar scales. Consistent with hypotheses, people high in ERU reported more negative affect after reading about an unfair event, were lower in Belief in a Just World, were higher in political liberalism, and were more likely to have voted for Hillary Clinton than Donald Trump in the 2016 US presidential election. These findings indicate that the ERU scale is a valid tool for understanding the extent to which people experience negative affect when experiencing or witnessing unfair events." @default.
