- W3007681465 abstract "Stainless-steel (SS) pipes are utilized as construction materials for various vacuum systems. The main reason for SS to be used widely in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) instrument is “the formation of Cr2O3 (protective layers) on the surfaces, as reported by R. O. Adams” (see Part 1, Chap-1, R. O. Adams[1-4]). On the other hand, for the instrument using electron beams, mild-steel pipes have some advantages such as X-ray shielding power (X-rays are emitted when the metal surfaces are bombarded with electron beams), higher thermal conductivity, and low cost. As is seen in the paper [1-1], outgassing rats of SSs (SS-304) after degassing in situ baking are much lower than the rates of mild steels, as shown in Figs. 2 (SS) and 6 (chromium-plated mild steel). On the other hand, outgassing rates of SSs (SS-304), after exposure to atmosphere and to argon gas following baking (Fig. 3), are almost same to outgassing rates of chromium-plated mild steel, as seen in Fig. 7 (chromium-plated mild steel)." @default.
