- W3008416882 abstract "The Dating Violence Prevention Project is a collaborative effortbetween SafePlace and the Theatre Action Project (TAP) with thegoal to develop a prevention project that addresses healthyrelationships and dating violence using youth theater. SafePlaceis a nonprofit agency that serves domestic violence and sexualassault survivors, and the Theater Action Project is a nonprofitagency whose mission it is to create and promote interactivetheater and educational programming that ignites communitydialogue around socially relevant topics. Both agencies arelocated in Austin, Texas.SafePlace and TAP developed the Dating Violence PreventionProject as a primary prevention program to provide peer educationto teenagers through interactive theater and raise teenageactors’ expectations about equality and respect in relationships.Sixteen (16) teen actors were recruited from area high schoolsand community organizations during Spring 2004. Over a period offive weeks during the summer, these teen actors received trainingfrom SafePlace on issues of dating violence, sexual violence, andhealthy relationships. They were also trained in Theatre-InAction (TIE) techniques, a unique method that combines theatricalelements with interactive moments in which the audience workswith the actors toward an educational or social goal. Anaudience may help decide, shape, question, or examine issues in aTIE program. The teen actors created the performance piece andthen met weekly to rehearse, receive continuing education, andperform. The teen actors received weekly stipends for theirparticipation.SafePlace contracted with the Institute on Domestic Violence andSexual Assault (IDVSA) at the University of Texas at AustinSchool of Social Work to evaluate this project. The IDVSAPrincipal Investigator (PI) used two methods to evaluate theproject. The IDVSA first administered surveys that asked aboutattitudes toward violence, leadership, and dating to the teenactors before the program began (pre-test); the same surveys weregiven after the development of the production and severalshowings of the performance (post-test). The researchers also 3conducted focus groups, one with the teen actors and one with theproject staff. This report presents the findings from thesurveys and the focus group discussions." @default.
