• W3009481590 abstract "무궁화는 목근(木槿) 등 원산지인 중국의 한어(漢語) 명칭이 그대로 한국과 일본에서 통용되고 있을 만큼 오래 전부터 한국과 일본에서도 친숙한 일상 속의 꽃이다. 하지만 이꽃에 대한 심상(心象)은 꽃 한 송이를 보는가, 아니면 한 여름 내내 3,000 여 송이가 피는 나무 한 그루를 보는가에 따라 ‘무상함’(중국, 일본)과 ‘무궁함’(한국)으로 각기 달랐다. 한국에서의 무궁화(無窮花)가 우리 민족과의 연관되어 나타나는 것은 역사적으로 연원이 깊으며 특별하다. 하지만 구한말 이전에는 문학에 거의 등장하지 않았고, 근대 이후에도 소중한 나라꽃으로서 관념적인 대상에 머물러있는 듯한 인상이 있다. 그에 비해 일본의 무쿠게(木槿, 무궁화의 일본 명칭)는 8세기경에 외래식물로 유입된 후, ‘아름답고 단명한 꽃’이라는 중국에서의 이미지를 그대로 답습하여 지금에 이르고 있다. 특히 16세기에는 다도의 발달과 함께 ‘일기일회(一期一會)’의 다도(茶道) 정신을 구현하는 꽃으로서 여름 다실의 대표가 되었고, 하이쿠에서도 활발하게 읊어지면서 일본문학 속으로 들어왔다. 일본의 대표적 하이쿠 시인 마쓰오 바쇼(松尾芭蕉, 1644-1694)가 읊은 하이쿠 <길섶에 핀/무궁화는 말에게/ 뜯어 먹히네!>는 무쿠게를 소재로 한 일본의 모든 시 중 가장 유명하다. 이 하이쿠를 한국어로 번역하여 읽을 경우, 일제강점기의 역사적 인과관계 등으로 인한 위화감을 느낄 수 있는데, 무궁화에 대한 한국과 일본의 미감과 향유의 문화적 바탕이 다르다는 점을 고려하면, 또 다른 해석과 감상이 가능하다. 20세기 후반 들어 일본에서는 덧없음을 상징하는 ‘무쿠게’에다 무궁함을 상징하는 ‘무궁화’의 이미지를 더한 하이쿠와 현대시들이 창작되고 있다. 머지않은 미래에는 일본 시인들이 구사한 무쿠게에 대한 탐미적이고 음악적이며 경쾌한 공감감적 표현이 나라꽃이라는 관념적 존중과 의무적 사랑에 갇히기 쉬운 무궁화에 대한 우리의 감성에도 영향을 미치게 되지 않을까. 일본 전통의 무쿠게와 우리의 나라꽃 무궁화(無窮花)의 심상이 교차하는 문학 교류가 활성화되어 역사적 인과관계로 난관에 봉착해있는 지금의 한일관계를 헤쳐 나갈 실마리를 제공할 수 있기를 기대한다." @default.
