- W3011487908 abstract "Abstract Sewage sludge is a major concern in the urban habitat which has begun to show increasing trends. With a growing population, the treatment load on the existing wastewater treatment plants is increasing with a number of them operating beyond the treatment capacity. It is difficult to expand the capacity of the existing wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). To avoid future problems, which the sewage sludge can cause, a solution to direct the sludge stream for material and energy recovery is promising. The thermochemical and biochemical conversion can be integrated to design a sewage sludge biorefinery. The approach in the biorefinery must focus on the simplification of the process rather than installing multiple process units and creating a complex. This chapter focuses on the understanding of existing WWTPs, materials in sewage sludge, and the existing conversion processes leading to the idea of an integrated sewage sludge biorefinery." @default.
