- W301166975 abstract "Qualitative and quantitative information was collected from a representative sample of urban Bangkok families on child care issues. Mothers are considered the preferred child care providers. The next most acceptable care giver is a relative or grandmother. There is general mistrust of care given in nurseries and day care centers. Findings confirm that 80-85% of urban Thai children aged under 3 years are cared for in the home by their mothers or relatives. Although economic development has been rapid the social changes affecting child care arrangements have changed little over time. The observation is made that a higher percentage of children enter pre-school at a younger age. Only a slight increase was observed in the percentage of children aged under 3 years in formal care. Type of child care is found to be related to the age of the mother and her educational levels. Well educated mothers are less likely to care for their own children probably due to work demands. Older mothers are more likely to have children cared for in a nursery or by a nonworking mother. Younger mothers tend to care for their own children or to place children in another living arrangement apart from her. Maternity leaves are short for most working women and breast feeding as a consequence is limited. Womens work in the informal sector in a family business or in own account work is found to be combined with own child care. Women working outside the home are found to be as likely to live separate from children compared to placing children in formal child care settings. Fathers are found to be spending more time playing with their children even though husbands are not involved in primary responsibilities. The percentage of children living in extended families has not declined. Children raised by a non-relative are found to be more likely to enter formal care. 16% of children lived apart from their mothers at some point in time during the first five years of life. Child care costs occur mostly during formal child care. Government policies must be sensitive to personal choice issues and actions to alleviate child care burdens for working mothers particularly for women working in the formal sector who have the most severe child care problems." @default.
