- W3012287641 abstract "Abstract This chapter introduces the issues surrounding the positive and negative effects of technologies on the safety of adolescent transportation. Pedestrian travel is the first mode of independent transit for adolescents. The cognitive processes required for safe pedestrian behaviors are attention, information processing, and decision making. These processes can be compromised by the usage of technology during transit, especially for adolescent pedestrians. To combat the negative effects of technology on pedestrian safety, interventions, such as policies, awareness campaigns, community programs for young pedestrian safety, and traditional and technology-based safe-pedestrian training education, have been developed and are reviewed in this chapter. Next, as adolescents become teen drivers, distracted driving becomes a clear risk in safe transportation. This issue of distracted teen driving is highlighted and the different models used to understand the effect of distraction on driving performance are discussed. Many factors contribute to the heightened risk of distracted driving among adolescents. These factors include less driving experience, increased use of smartphones, and increased social pressure. Due to the pervasive nature of this problem, many technological and nontechnological interventions are being studied and applied to address distracted driving. This chapter concludes by highlighting interventions that are aimed at improving the safety of driving. These include policy changes, smartphone applications, and vehicle-mediated technologies." @default.
