- W3012308232 abstract "Abstract A series of 3d divalent metallic complexes [M(L)2]. nH2O/[M(L)2(H2O)2], (M(II) = Mn, Co, Ni, and Zn; n = 0, 1; L = Nitrogenous Schiff base) were synthesized from an unsymmetrical nitrogenous ligand, 3-[(2-hydroxy-5-methyl-phenylimino)-methyl]-napthalen-2-ol. The synthesized compounds were characterized via micro (CHN) analysis; spectral (FT-IR, UV–vis, ESI-MS, NMR (ligand), magnetic susceptibility and molar conductivity measurements and then screened for anti-microbial activity to establish chelation effect. Molar conductivity values indicate neutrality for the complexes. The nitrogenous ligand on spectral results basis exhibited tridentate nature but adopted bidentate chelating capability. Also, spectroscopic and analytical evaluations revealed tetrahedral geometry for Mn2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+ complexes; and octahedral geometry for Co2+ complex. The magnetic susceptibility values validated the assigned geometries, confirmed the complexes as monomeric and paramagnetic in nature, except for the Zn2+ complex which exhibited diamagnetism. The antimicrobial screening showed broad spectrum possibilities for the studied complexes. Co2+ significantly displayed the best microbial actions against B. cereus, S. aureus, E. coli, and A. niger with inhibitory zones of 28.00 mm; 24.00 mm; 20.00 mm and 10.00 mm correspondingly. Evaluation of the binding affinities using molecular docking approach indicate that Co2+ complex was most active against B. cereus. The highest binding energy together with the hydrogen bonding formation, Pi-Pi T shaped, and van der Waals interactions further confirmed the observation. The structural and electronic properties of the complexes calculated using Density functional theory (DFT) showed that Co2+ complex also displayed a lower HOMO-LUMO gap, signifying a higher tendency to donate electrons to electron-accepting species (biological systems)." @default.
