- W3013227698 abstract "Entrepreneurial activity, like many phenomena, is unevenly distributed across geographic space. The entrepreneurial landscape is dotted with well-known hubs of activity such as Silicon Valley and Route 128 in Boston (Saxenian, 1994), as well as the Third Italy and the Sakaki district in Japan (Malecki, 1993). This same landscape is also made up of many lagging regions in deindustrialized and remote locales that are on the periphery of the global entrepreneurship community. It is these two extremes, and the increasingly important role of entrepreneurs and small businesses in a dynamic, informational economy, that drives research attempts to explain why some places are more entrepreneurial than others. This drive stems from the many benefits entrepreneurs bestow on their communities, including the creation of jobs (Kirchhoff and Phillips, 1988; Von Bargen et al., 2003; Baptista et al., 2008) and the diversification of the industrial base (Boschma and Frenken, 2006; Andersson and Koster, 2011). Unpacking the entrepreneurial landscape is a rather complex task however, because of the embeddedness of entrepreneurs in their local environments (Jack and Anderson, 2002; Welter and Smallbone, 2011). This embedded nature means that the individual characteristics of entrepreneurs, as well as their recognition and pursuit of opportunities, are moderated by the unique legal, institutional and social characteristics of regions (Audretsch, 2007). This blend of regional characteristics comprises the milieu of entrepreneurial communities around the world." @default.
