- W3013577063 abstract "The purpose of this paper is to explore the civil-military relations in China after 1989, in a context characterized by the efforts of the Chinese Communist Party to enhance the state capacity in order to stabilize its governance. More specifically, the paper will shed light on how the Chinese Communist Party managed its relationship with the People’s Liberation Army in balancing the need for a strong military with the need to maintain its authority over the military organization. The findings show that the Chinese Communist Party successfully made use of the policy readjustments and newly-created state mechanisms to accommodate the military’s needs for development and organizational autonomy, while curtailing the financial autonomy and those roles that might give the People’s Liberation Army leverage over the Party." @default.
