- W3013720932 abstract "The purpose of this chapter is to provide a brief overview of the intersections between gender and environmentalism, while affirming the cultural variations in how these ideas are constructed and enacted. We argue that recognizing this intersectionality of gender and the environment, and the ways it has played out in the history of environmental studies, distribution of environmental ills, and efforts of environmental activists, is imperative to addressing our most pressing socially created environmental issues such as food security, water access, pollution, and ultimately climate change. To begin, we trace the emergence and evolution of the field of environmental studies and one of its more controversial offshoots, ecofeminism. We then explore how an intersectional lens can help to address the shortcomings and overgeneralizations that scholars in these fields often perpetuate, and look to examples from environmental justice and the population control debate for further nuance. We examine how perceptions of gender and womanhood have influenced the credibility and power of female scientists and activists, sometimes to their detriment and sometimes to their advantage. Finally, we review the environmental vulnerabilities that disproportionately impact women across the globe, including the global threat of climate change. In our concluding argument, we seek to demonstrate the saliency of gender both as contributing to the crises and as holding emergent potential for solutions." @default.
