- W3014184248 abstract "Using Anna Freud’s case example of a young woman who suffers from severe anxiety, this chapter is concerned with the discernment and alleviation of transference-resistance. Emphasizing that transference-resistance is not to be confused with a general unwillingness on part of the analysand to productively engage in the analytic process, Morgenthaler identifies three different forms of transference-resistance. First, transference-resistance can be the result of defensive elements arising from ego-achievements that were developed at some earlier point in the analysand’s life as protective measures. Crucially, in this case, transference-resistance is neither rooted in the id nor in the analytic relationship as such but brought in as a foreign object in the form of an ego activity. Consequently, the analyst, in his or her efforts to overcome the transference-resistance, must focus on the ego rather than the id. Second, and more complicatedly, transference-resistance can be a consequence of fixed character attitudes that influence the analytic relationship through exhibiting uniform tendencies (e.g. contempt) which then determine the analytic relationship. Third, and most problematically, transference-resistances can become manifest in the form of acting-out. The chapter ends with a warning against simplistic conclusions about dealing with transference-resistance." @default.
