- W3014295695 abstract "Water quality within urbanised river and estuarine systems is under the threat of a range pollutants and modifications to the landscape. At the same time, waterfront spaces within cities are increasingly recognised as prime land for redevelopment to define the image of the city, catalyse tourism opportunities and promote economic development. The importance of preserving the quality of water systems is recognised among policy and decision makers, evidenced by the prevalence of water sensitive urban design objectives, principles and practices within planning and policy frameworks. However, there is a need to reconcile such water quality objectives with the economic and tourism driven objectives of traditional waterfront developments. This paper discusses the emerging concept of water sensitive waterfront developments and investigates how synergies between ecological and urban interventions at the waterfront could improve water quality. To investigate this question, the concept of a water sensitive waterfront in the context of Perth Water in Western Australia is explored. The research is undertaken firstly, through an analysis stage leading to the formation of key principles and secondly, through a design stage, which investigates how these key principles can be applied to achieve water quality benefits as well as other environmental, social, cultural and economic outcomes. The findings of this research highlight the complexity of developing a water sensitive waterfront and underline the importance of a comprehensive analytical process to achieve outcomes from a range of perspectives and maximise synergies. This research demonstrates how interventions to improve water quality can define a waterfront proposal and create opportunities for urban extension and densification, while maintaining a landscape character that sensitively interfaces with the natural riverine environment. The research also highlights how water sensitive interventions can offer unique responses at the waterfront, distinguishing such developments from cliched, traditional waterfront designs." @default.
