- W3014337072 abstract "This chapter shadows light over the fundamental imaging techniques used in the field of ophthalmology; namely fundus retinal imaging. Since it is a noninvasive way of imaging the retina, the method is popular among the ophthalmic community and the targeted population. Fundus retinal images reveal vital information about the health status of a person. Over the past 15 years, extensive research and clinical studies have been carried out using fundus images for automatizing the pathology screening and diagnosing process. Various pathology could be screened and diagnosed using fundus retinal images. In this chapter, we focus on three major conditions—macular edema, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma, which are the most important causes of blindness in the developed world, respectively. These diseases are associated with an observable variation in the structural and functional properties of the retina. We also review the current state-of-the-art fundus retinal image-based automatic screening and diagnosing techniques developed so far. The problems and challenges associated with fundus retinal image processing are also discussed in this chapter." @default.
