- W301492459 abstract "Macedonia and its citizens find themselves at a kairos moment in their history, a moment of great creative opportunity, although the well-known Balkan pessimism--a reaction to recent events--makes it difficult to see this opportunity clearly. Previous history has never afforded the free and equal expression of religious affiliation, conviction, and practice to all peoples who lived in the territory of the present Republic of Macedonia. During the period under communism, the constitution and the laws proclaimed freedom of religion, but everyone is aware that this was controlled and severely restricted for at least some religious people and groups. In my personal visits to Macedonia I have seen first-hand the oppression and control carried out by the communist government over churches and religious organizations and believers. While religion was treated infinitely better than in neighboring Albania and Bulgaria, nevertheless, the religious communities were not able freely to grow and express themselves. The situation has changed for the better since independence; for churches and religious communities new legal and material opportunities arose. The leadership and membership of the religious communities welcomed these opportunities. There are many evidences of a lively and dynamic growth in personal religiosity of many people, including the youth, as well as in strengthening of religious institutions. This does not mean that all restraints have disappeared in every place and instance. There are still many vestiges of bureaucrats' needlessly hampering both the free expression of religion and the building of the material base necessary for its fruition. Despite such aggravations, it is clear that enormous progress has been made: New buildings have been erected and old ones renovated; new educational institutions have been established where young people can obtain an education appropriate for religious leadership, while are permitted to study abroad to reach higher educational levels. What seems to be missing are sustained, broad-based interreligious contacts and cooperation. Generally, each religious community developed alongside the with a decent level of mutual recognition and respect. It is fair to say that, even today, most people in the Balkans do not have a strong desire to interact positively with those of another ethnicity and religion. Both the past and the present lead to caution, as others have been both rivals and opponents. Thus, interreligious cooperation does not come easily and naturally; the normal instinct is for people to live within their own communities--if need be, next to each other--and to seek support and consolation in one's own community, which provides a sense of safety and comfort. Such relations, however, are inadequate in times of crises. For a newly independent country that is made up of such a diverse population as Macedonia's, it is not at all surprising that crises came. We know that every beginning is hard even when the conditions are perfect, and we know that the heritage of the Balkans does not make for perfect conditions. The burdens of the wars in Macedonia's immediate vicinity worsened interethnic relations and placed Macedonia on the verge of a potentially devastating war. It was good for Macedonia that its religious leaders held that religion ought not to add fuel to the fire but, on the contrary, should be a factor for peace and reconciliation, despite a high level of bitterness that affected nearly everyone, including religious people. The religious leadership first of all recognized that positive transactions are desirable and possible; it is to the advantage of each community to show restraint and to establish contact and give assurances to each other and to the population at large that religious differences are not the cause of violence and that conflicting aspirations need to be resolved in peaceful and democratic ways. …" @default.
