- W3014972007 abstract "From time immemorial, humanity has replicated itself through copulation. We were always subject to certain generational and generative facts as well as genitive limitations of arbitrariness, and irreversibility of life’s trajectory and finitude. Today, biotechnology has undone many such eternal constraints. We can choose our baby’s natal sex and may change our own. Pregnancy can occur asexually, parents may be same-sex, and conception tripartite. This chapter probes what happens with abolishment of absolutes, when fantasies we merely imagined are actualised in reality. On the positive side, medical advances raised safety levels in childbirth, reducing maternal and child mortality. IVF and gamete donation enabled new forms of family formation. Efficient female-based contraception results in fewer babies per family, and coupled with new social mores has facilitated new child-free expressions of female ‘generative identity’. However, reproductive innovations also have unforeseen consequences. In many societies the birth-rate has fallen below the critical replacement-rate. Deferred childbearing and environmental pathogens endanger fertility, necessitating novel interventions with bewildering psychosocial implications and potential ethical violations, now that genetic technology can override evolution. For those ‘haunted’ by desire for a baby, inability to produce one has a profound emotional impact. Uncertainty may prevail for many painful years beyond menopause, permeating every aspect of life – intra-psychic, interpersonal, psychosexual and occupational. Given the complex unconscious motivations and life-long effects of assisted reproduction on treatment recipients, donors and ensuing offspring, psychotherapeutic reflective space is a vital necessity, offering a safe-haven to process these. Furthermore, extreme social hazards demand vigilant evaluation of unintended consequences by regulative bodies and reproductive practitioners." @default.
