- W3015096287 abstract "Natural composites are attracting a continuously growing interest by the research community due to their lower environmental impact compared to traditional composite materials. Despite the many experimental efforts on the characterization of natural fibers (mainly flax, jute, and hemp) and their related composites, the majority of the experimental analysis only focused on the estimation of ultimate strain and mean elastic modulus. However, in natural composites, opposite to the brittle, almost perfectly elastic traditional composites such as glass and carbon fiber reinforced plastics (G- and CFRP), the viscoelastic component of the material response cannot be neglected. This work presents original experimental results on the mechanical characterization of flax/bio-epoxy composites, whereas tests have been designed to highlight their viscoelastic, viscoplastic, and pseudo-plastic response. Specimens have been produced through a Light Resin Transfer Moulding process and tested in pure monotonic tension, cyclic tension, and creep. The experimental results clearly show that to predict the mechanical response of natural composites it is needed to utilize a model capable to capture the elastic, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic characteristics. In fact, the behavior of flax natural composites is found to be both viscoelastic, being highly influenced by the strain rate, and viscoplastic, since the major inelastic strain is found to accumulate when strains exceed 0.2%. Interesting results are further found observing that there is a significant portion of the inelastic strain which recovers over time. Further, creep is found to highly influence the inelastic strain accumulation even at ambient temperatures, whereby the strain rate is very important even at very low rates." @default.
