- W3015210059 abstract "The loss of biodiversity threatens the ecosystems’ functioning, which is related to the provision of both food resources and other vital goods and services for people – access to drinking water, protection from natural disasters, recreation and more. The Food and Agriculture Organization warned that the world's ability to produce food is threatened by humanity's failure to protect biodiversity. Although more food is being produced today than ever before, it is increasingly reliant on monocultures and a small number of species, suggesting their susceptibility to diseases and climate change. Indigenous plant varieties and autochthonous animal species, which are the base of country's genetic resource, are becoming rarer. This makes food production less sustainable and biodiversity an indispensable resource for ensuring food sovereignty. The importance of the topic of food sustainability requires that informed and educated consumers and producers are actively involved in the process of biodiversity conservation and food supply for present and future generations. To address this issue, the study offers an environmental communication methodology that focuses on two main aspects. The first examines the roots of sustainable nutrition or the identification and conservation of native species in different categories of protected areas. The second covers sustainable ways of food production and distribution - agroecology and biodiversity, solidarity agriculture, farmers' markets, seed production and distribution, etc.The methods are based on education for sustainable development and offer a variety of approaches to engage the public – city tours, workshops, seminars, exchanges, science slam, and more. The main target groups of communication are young people – school and university students, and the general public is indirectly involved by spreading information through various channels. The study framework is a German-Bulgarian exchange of sharing good practices to cover the trans-regional and European dimensions of the topic. In the next phase, existing good examples of farming native cultivated and wild species, including in protected areas in Bulgaria and Germany, are analyzed within the project “EcoNa” in the context of biodiversity conservation and ecosystems’ sustainability, and from there – for food security." @default.
