The adolescent girls of slums areliving in poor community and have poor practice of menstrual hygiene. It is important to knowextent and variation of proper menstrual hygiene practice in the backward region of Eastern UttarPradesh. Material and methods: Present analysis is the part of thesis data confined to 320adolescents initially interrogated from the 2 randomly selected slum clusters Karaundi andBhogabeer. Analysis is confined to the menstrual pattern and use of sanitary napkins and thevariation with socio-demographic characteristics. Observations and Results: Overall age of adolescents was 16.68 2.47 with predominance of Hindus (97.2%). Majority of the adolescents(68.8%) had equal or more than 9 years of schooling. Only 21.3% of general caste and rest OBCand SC/ST. Mothers of majority (61.9%) of the adolescents was house wife. Menstrual and cyclesdurations of 51.3% and 64.4% adolescents was between 4-5 days and 28-32 days respectively.Around two fifth adolescents were exclusively using sanitary napkins; those using cloth as theobservant, 92.3% were not washing before use. Use of sanitary napkins was increasing with age& education of adolescents as well as mother’s education; no religion difference was seen, whilecaste was influencing use of sanitary napkins (highest 64.7% in general class). Use of sanitarynapkins in adolescents, whose mothers were unskilled worker, was only 16.0% while in rest itwas about 3 times. Adequate number of use of pads during menstruation was similar irrespectiveof adolescent’s age, years of schooling, religion, type of family and mother’s occupation; butdiffered by caste class. Use of adequate number of pads was increasing among the adolescentsaccording to the mother’s education of adolescents. Irrespective of age of adolescents, religion, caste class and mother’s education & occupation; place of disposal of used pads to improperplaces was statistically same, but differed statistically with education of adolescents and type offamily. Conclusion: Based on the findings and reporting of good impact of educationalintervention in other studies, it is suggested that adolescents of slums need proper education topromote the practice of sanitary napkins, frequency of pad change and disposal at proper place;however, the affordability has to be kept in mind." @default.
