- W3015849276 abstract "Thinking about gender in relation to crime fiction is not simply a matter of representation; it is also the case that the genre itself – its formal structures and stylistic features – has long been considered gendered. The gender dissonance evident in Lord Peter Wimsey’s homosocial dependence on Bunter, and in Philip Marlowe’s homoerotic fascination with “big” men, offer early indications of the genre’s capacity to offer a space for the exploration of non-normative sexualities. The relationship between gender and genre is thus both formally and politically significant. The chapter considers some of the critical debates emerging from the perception of gendered modes of detection, and the changing constructions of masculinity and femininity at play in the genre. It explores the centrality of desire to plot and character and consider the emergence of the detective as a transgressive figure. The transformation of the detective’s body was accompanied by changes in his, and her, methodology." @default.
