- W3017145909 abstract "This paper aims at researching, analyzing and explaining the posiible problems Macedonian learners of English language are encountering with when acquiring English word order, with a special emphasis on clross-linguistic influence. English language has relatvely fixed word order, which means that there is a strict syntactic hierarchy among the sentence elements and the movement of each element may result in changing the meaning of the sentence or in grammatically inacceptable structures. On the other hand, Macedonian language shows relatively flexible word order. Considering the differences in the syntax of these two languages, it is of a great importance for Macedonian learners to acquire English word order correctly even at the lower levels, thus be able to achieve better language competencies. This paper gives a comprehensive contrastive analysis of English and Macedonian word order from the point of view of the order of basic sentence constituents: subject-verb-object (SVO), the order of modifiers in the noun phrases as well as the position of adverbial phrases in the sentence. Data for this study was drawn from Macedonian Englsh Learner Corpus (MELC), which is an electronic collection of texts written by Macedonian learners of English. The focus of this research are Macedonian learners at CEFR levels A1, A2 and B1. In order to determine to what extent the word order has been acquired and to realize how learners make progress across the levels, the word order acquisition is examined gradually by analysing the most frequent errors at each level and by the use of contrastive analysis (CA) method. The most typical errors have been analysed to identify if they result from intralingual factors (developmental errors) or are due to L1 interference (transfer errors). The results of this corpus-based study show that Macedonian learners of English, especially those at lower levels, when acquiring English word order, mostly rely on the equivalent structures in their mother tongue. Therefore, possible word order errors might occur whenever there are differences in the two examined languages. Most of the errors made by the examinee are transfer errors and they can be exhibited in structures which do not follow the standard subject-verb-object (SVO) pattern such as interrogative forms, relative clauses and it-extraposition (Macedonian subject-free sentences). Typical errors are made in the distribution od adverbials due to the flexible order of adverbials in Macedonian language. Learners at higher levels make fewer errors in the word order compared to those at lower levels. The results of this research will draw teachers' attention to specific problems Macedonian students are encountering with when acquiring English word order and it will help them to improve teaching materials and methods of language teaching. Apart from teachers, this research will provide help to translators, interpreters and all those proffesionals who use English language in their everyday work." @default.
