- W3018943532 abstract "Thermo-oxidative stabilization of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is a highly exothermic reaction that can be regulated through judicious addition of comonomers. Herein, guanidinium itaconate (GIA) was synthesized and copolymerized with acrylonitrile (AN) as a candidate for PAN-based carbon fiber precursors. P(AN-co-GIA) copolymers were compared to analogous itaconic acid (ITA)-containing PAN copolymers through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The kinetic parameters of activation energy and pre-exponential factor were determined along with the cyclization index at given conditions. DSC analysis significantly indicates that P(AN-co-GIA) copolymers initiate stabilization at lower temperature and reduce exothermic heat flow by as much as 37% in air as compared to P(AN-co-ITA) copolymers. Further, the cyclization rate proceeds at faster kinetic rates for the GIA-containing copolymers, thereby providing opportunity for increased process speeds through oxidation of PAN-based precursors." @default.
