- W3018980364 abstract "Numerous published studies and a meta-analysis suggestthat priming religion causes an increase in prosocial behaviors. However, mediating mechanisms of this purported causal relationshiphave not yet been formally tested. In line with culturalevolutionary theories and their supporting evidence, I test theproposition that public self-awareness mediates the effect ofpriming religion on prosociality. However, other theories ofreligion suggest that persons may feel small when perceiving God,and these feelings have predicted prosociality in publishedresearch. In line with this, I also test whether a sense of smallself and, relatedly, self-transcendent connection, are possiblemediators of the religion priming effect on prosociality. In thisstudy, I implicitly prime religion and test whether the aboveconstructs mediate a potential effect on prosocial intentions.Although self-transcendent connection predicted prosocialintentions, the implicit prime affected neither the mediatingvariables nor prosocial intentions, nor were any significantindirect effects evident. Thus, no causal evidence of mediation wasfound. In addition, I examined whether God representations moderatethe path from implicit religion priming to each proposed mediator. The results suggest that a benevolent God representation moderatesthe effect of religion priming on self-transcendent connection andthat an ineffable God representation moderates the effect ofreligion priming on sense of small self. Lastly, I tested formediation with a cross-sectional path model containing religiosityand belief in God as predictors. The results suggest thatreligiosity, controlling for belief in God, predicts prosocialitythrough self-transcendent connection but belief in God, controllingfor religiosity, does not predict prosociality. Implications forthe religion priming literature and, more generally, the psychologyof religion, are discussed." @default.
