- W302007020 abstract "iiXTe live today in a system that is in the last stages of the ▼ V process of breaking up on a world-wide basis/'1 How many black high school students would agree with this statement? How many of them have heard of the man who penned it? How many black youngsters are working actively to hasten the breakup? These questions are important because the answers are prerequisites to an understanding of today's black high school student whose agony threatens to engulf the educational community in never ending crisis. Although in recent months the focus of the news media's attention has been on the nation's colleges and their struggle with the rising tide of student activism, it should not be forgotten that the country's high schools have been and are now in a state of ferment. Today in cities all over the country policemen are as much a fixture in high schools as crossing guards in grade schools. Policemen protect the halls, guard the doorways and patrol the grounds. Yet educators know that force- armed force in the public schools-creates as many problems as militia men on college campuses. The presence of armed force is merely a symptom of more deep-seated problems. It is a sign that the school has all but depleted that reservoir of diffuse administrative support upon which schools, like all compliance oriented institutions, depend for their persistence. The use of such force should be a signal to parents, educators, and community leaders to step-up efforts to communicate with young people and to jointly and cooperatively seek solutions to the problems attendant to urban adolescent education." @default.
