- W3020242849 abstract "This paper reports on the sound recordings used by teachers in childcare centres in an Australian capital city. Data were gathered by a written survey (272 surveys returned, 31% response rate). The survey asked respondents to indicate what music resources, including books, music kits, sound recordings (CDs and audio tapes), videos and DVDs, and other resources (including musical instruments) were used. Of all these resources, CDs and audio tapes were the dominant category (66.4% of items). Resources were subjected to content analysis, mapping content to the Music Education National Conference's (MENC) pre-kindergarten music standards and their achievement standards, the content standards being singing and playing instruments, creating music, responding to music, and understanding music. Findings revealed a wide variety of sound recordings being used. However, recordings for the most part tended not to explicitly address the achievement standards spanning each of the four music content standards. The singing and playing instruments standard was the most widely addressed in the analysed CDs and tapes. The delivery of music education prior to schooling continues to be problematic, with educators in settings such as childcare centres and preschools lacking the confidence and skills to deliver meaningful music instruction (Gharavi, 1993; Kelly, 1998; Nardo et al., 2006; Scott-Kassner, 1999). Addressing this issue has predominantly focused on improving music courses in preservice training and through professional development (Tarnowski & Barrett, 1992; Lam & Wright, 2004; Miranda, 2004; Scott- Kassner, 1999). Another avenue identified by de Vries (2006) was exposing teachers in early childhood settings to music resources appropriate for use with young children. The impact of having access to adequate music resources has been shown to have an impact on teachers' confidence to teach music in other settings, namely primary schools (Hennessy et al., 2001; Holden & Button, 2006). Research focusing on the delivery of music education in early childhood settings has tended to neglect the resources that teachers use. There are, however, exceptions. In a survey of the musical practices in daycare centres Gharavi (1993) identified song materials being used such as recordings by Ella Jenkins and Walt Disney. In Temmerman's (1998) survey of childhood music education programs in Australia she found that 50 % of respondents used audiotapes or CDs. Finally, in a survey of 293 preschools, Nardo et al., (2006) reported 99% of respondents using CDs and cassettes. The majority of sound recordings were music specifically produced for children such as Hap Palmer, Raffi, and Ella Jenkins. The sound recordings identified in these studies were not their focal point, and there was minimal discussion about the content of these resources. This provided the impetus for seeking to determine what sound recordings early childhood educators were using and the musical content of these recordings." @default.
