- W302084375 abstract "Several factors influence the selection of a dissertation topic, including the student's familiarity with, and interest in a problem, the faculty's availability and preferences, and practical considerations such as timeline and funding (Isaac et ah, 1989, Lei, 2009, Useem, 1997). This article identifies the popular dissertation and trends in the Social Sciences since 2000. We argue that students should be encouraged to choose original rather than trendy subjects for their dissertations. We also recommend considering explicitly the availability and quality of data as part of the dissertation topic selection process. We note that some appear to be clustered around a few educational institutions, a phenomenon that may require further investigation. Keywords: Dissertations, Theses, Research Problems, Research Selection Criteria, UMI ********** The dissertation being the final and most significant deliverable in the journey to a doctorate degree, students worry early and deeply about the topic of their dissertation. The selection criteria are well-known (Isaac et ah, 1989, Lei, 2009, Useem, 1997), including the student's familiarity with, and interest in a problem, the faculty's availability and preferences, and practical considerations such as timeline and funding. Table 1 summarizes the selection factors, as obtained by Lei from a review of the literature (Lei, 2009). While any of the factors in Table 1 is a legitimate consideration, they are not equally important and students often focus on the wrong parameters in making a decision. The purpose of this article is to identify the popular dissertation over the last decade, taking a new look at the selection criteria in this process. This discussion will focus on the Social Sciences, as selecting dissertation in the physical sciences and technical disciplines (e.g., mathematics, physics, chemistry) is often guided by practical constraints, such as the faculty's specialty and on-going research, equipment's availability, and grant funding. (Lei, 2009). In the following, we will discuss familiarity, trends, and feasibility as selection criteria. Familiarity A favorite claim of students is that they must choose a subject that they are passionate about. This is a myth and it is dangerous. Cone and Foster (2006) argue: Poor Sources of Research Ideas One common way to come up with a research idea is from one's own personal experience. The recovering alcoholic decides to study families of alcoholics. The student with chronic test anxiety chooses to relate test anxiety and type of question to performance on math exams. The 40-year-old parent decides to study the waning sexual interest of busy executive spouses. In fact, many of us are in the behavioral sciences, especially psychology, because of an interest in some aspect of our own experience. Don't get us wrong. This is not a bad reason to be in psychology in the first place. But, it is probably not a good idea to plan thesis or dissertation research around something with a high degree of personal emotional relevance. Save these issues for therapy. (p 64) The passionate-about approach is dangerous for two reasons. First, it almost inevitably leads to confirmation bias. If the researcher has an emotional involvement in a topic, he or she starts with preconceived ideas of what the results of the investigation will be--should be--and selects or interprets the data accordingly, if perhaps unwittingly. Second, the researcher will look for data in familiar places. In particular, adult students pursuing an advanced degree may focus on their place of employment. This frequently becomes a serious impediment during the study when conflicts of interest and issues related to proprietary data arise. In some cases, these roadblocks will kill the project. Trends Students are instinctively attracted by popular subjects, the hot topics in Table 1. …" @default.
