- W3021006935 abstract "Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) comprises magnificent insects that are commonly known as ladybirds or lady beetles. Mostly, they are predaceous on numerous phytophagous insects and acarine pests and could be manipulated in biocontrol programs. Coccinellids are both specialists (feeding on monospecific diet) and generalists. Usually, specialists are better biocontrol agents as they will not disperse and focus on the nontarget prey. However, a few generalists also have an immense biocontrol potential. This chapter presents an overview of coccinellids in terms of attributes that enable them to a better biocontrol agents and their utility in the insect and acarine pest management programs. Biocontrol is largely dependent on feeding propensity, which is discussed in the light of prey specialization, prey suitability, and food economics. Analysis of food handling has been done in terms of functional response, numerical response, and efficiency of conversion of ingested materials. These analytical tools are the indicators of the success of biocontrol program using predaceous ladybirds. Ladybirds are highly promiscuous and efficient mating models in studies pertaining to ecological and evolutionary significance. Body size and age have important roles in the quantitative progeny production in ladybirds. The status of ladybirds in the guild tags their success or failure. Successful struggle within and outside the family is a key for the successful establishment of certain invasive ladybirds in new biogeographical habitats. Prey–predator interactions are largely driven by semiochemicals released by both prey and predators. Ladybirds' behavior is triggered by semiochemicals; their foraging behavior is kairomone driven, mating behavior is dependent on sex pheromones, and they refrain from oviposition after perceiving oviposition-deterring pheromones left by the footprints of the enemies. Temperature is a major abiotic factor followed by light which affects the development, reproduction, and demography of ladybirds. The biocontrol aspects of ladybirds preying on aphids, coccids, diaspids, and other pests are also reviewed and discussed." @default.
