- W3021014932 abstract "This chapter discusses a few methods for amino-acid assays. A successful assay for amino acids requires some knowledge of the nutrition and physiology of the assay organism. Quantitative determination of a particular amino acid by microbiological assay requires an organism that, in a specific medium, will not grow without that ammo acid and whose growth is proportional only to the quantity of the amino acid provided. Rapid growth is an additional aid not only in the speed of obtaining the results of the assay but it may also increase the precision of the assay. The sensitivity of the organism for the particular amino acid may be an important factor. The selection of the test organism and the choice of method for measuring growth are interdependent. An agar diffusion assay for phenylalanine is based on the inhibition of growth of Bacillus subtilis by β-2-thienylalanine and its competitive reversal by phenylalanine." @default.
