- W3021167217 abstract "Publisher SummaryNegotiation is ubiquitous. As a formal, problem-solving event, the paradigmatic industrial, legal, and diplomatic negotiation figures prominently in the news media, while as an activity of social decision making on substantive matters, it often goes unnoticed, sometimes even to participants, yet regularly and routinely occurs in myriad interpersonal encounters in innumerable social settings. Most of the research rarely considers the communicative processes of negotiation, and overridingly conceptualizes negotiation as a decontextualized formal event. Although communication is recognized to be a crucial feature of negotiation, the ways in which communication is accomplished have been overwhelmingly glossed over or taken for granted rather than described in detail. This chapter discusses how negotiation is undertaken through discourse and how negotiation as an activity is both contingent upon and constitutive of context. To gain insight into negotiation as an activity, it is useful to focus on negotiation as an event. However, as an activity of social decision making, where decisions on substantive matters are properly made conjointly, negotiation is not restricted to formally-defined events." @default.
