- W3021180158 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter reviews electrokinetic-based microfluidic processes for lab-on-a-chip applications. While designing and controlling lab-on-a-chip devices, the electrokinetic-driven liquid flows in microchannels are to be considered. A rearrangement of the charges on the solid surface and the balancing charges in the liquid is called the electrical double layer. In most lab-on-a-chip applications, an electro-osmotic flow is preferred to the pressure driven flow. One of the reasons is the plug-like velocity profile of an electro-osmotic flow. Most channels in modern micro-fluidic devices and micro-electro-mechanical systems are made using micromachining technologies. In most electro-osmotic flows in microchannels, the flow rates and the size of the micro-channels are very small. Many micro-channels do not have uniform surface properties. The surface heterogeneity may be caused by the impurities of the materials, by the adhesion of the solutes of the solution, and by the desired chemical surface modifications. An electro-osmotic flow induced by an unsteady applied electric field or electro-osmotic flow under an alternating electrical field has unique features and applications." @default.
