- W3021184607 abstract "This chapter looks into the near and future possibilities associated with opto-electronic and fiber optic technology. It also discusses new and perceived developments and indicates the use of optics by government, military and industry. The use of optical fibers in the commercial world is split into three separate classes: (1) telecommunications (mainly concentrating on high performance trunk lines and area networks); (2) military and industrial (where the emphasis is centered on digital communications and safety/ security); and (3) local area networks (LANS) or Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDNs), which are mainly used in the business world. Interest in applications, such as government systems, oceanographic projects and industrial processor-controlled networks, is rapidly growing and the use of LANs and associated optoelectronics in customer premises is expected to increase by an annual average growth of 70 per cent. The future of fiber optics is the future of communications. With fibers, it is possible to have high bandwidth and almost unlimited potential for upgrading. Applications like multimedia and videoconferencing make high bandwidth very essential. Over wide area networks, the installed fiber optic infrastructure can be expanded to accommodate almost unlimited traffic. Community antenna television (CATV) or “cable TV” operators are installing fibers very fast because advanced digital TV thrives in a fiber-based environment. Even wireless communications need fiber, connecting local low power cellular or Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS) transceivers to the switching matrix." @default.
