- W3021355939 abstract "This part describes the process by which the most important of the structural elements of a highway system, bridges, are designed. This involves a top-down approach, starting with the various components of the bridge itself, then the support piers, then the footings. There are three types of bridge designs for basic highway overpasses: (1) cored slabs, (2) concrete reinforced girders, and (3) steel beams. For single-span bridges, they are supported exclusively on what are called “end bents.” For multispan bridges, there are two types of interior pier supports: (1) multiple column and (2) hammerhead. And there are two general types of footings for piers: (1) spread and (2) pile. End bents are typically built around driven pile systems.So as to include as much insight into the engineering that goes into a bridge design, only multispan bridges with steel beams supported by hammerhead piers on pile footings will be considered. The other combinations are still used and follow a similar design process. However, the combination chosen here is the most interesting, and considered the more elegant for its intended function than the other possibilities." @default.
