- W3021533206 abstract "This chapter examines stress proliferation as it is found within the continuing in-home care segment of the caregiving career. The core issue addresses the impacts of one domain of experience on another, especially the extent to which primary stressors, strains anchored in caregiving activities, generate secondary stressors, problems occurring outside the boundaries of caregiving. Over a 1-year period, poor, and deteriorating cognitive functioning leads to an increased sense of having lost one's relationship to the patient; behavior problems, especially those that escalate, produce an intensification of role captivity; and expanding patient dependency upon the caregiver generates role overload, particularly among those whose initial responsibilities are circumscribed. Increases in primary stressors are accompanied by increments in certain role strains and by an erosion of personal identity, secondary stressors with depressive consequences manifest across an interval of 1 year. Secondary stressors, however, appear rather separate from long-term increments in care-related stress and its depressive sequelae. Augmentations in depression over the long-term appear to be triggered by unmanageable patient behavior and mediated by role overload and role captivity. The impact of sociodemographic characteristics on subsequent exposure to care-related stressors appears to be indirect, transmitted via the stability of these stressors over time. The influence of socio-demographic characteristics on changes in depression as time passes is largely indirect, relayed by way of the stability of care-related stressors and the association of these stressors with depression." @default.
