- W3021553477 abstract "This chapter examines the implications for the prevention and investigation of a staged kidnapping. A staged kidnapping creates the appearance that a kidnapping has occurred when it has not. Staged kidnappings are typically prosecuted for the crime they conceal. Staged kidnappings can originate in public or private locations, depending on the scenario being played out by the perpetrator and the offender/victim relationship. Staged kidnappings are generally perpetrated via persuasion and deception. A firearm is often used in staged kidnappings. In each of the staged kidnappings reviewed, force is sufficient to cause the death of the victim. A majority of staged kidnapping victims are transported during the abduction. The testimony of witnesses and physical evidence contribute to apprehension and convictions. The challenge for law enforcement and security professionals in preventing a staged kidnapping is that the precursors are often too well hidden. The chapter gives suggestions for identifying a staged scene, which include conducting a comprehensive and thorough review of the documented scene, giving little thought to the time involved; studying and taking account of the victim; identifying and documenting all indicators of staging; identifying and documenting possible motives for the original act and for the staging of the crime; and determining who would have benefited from the original act and the staging of the crime scene. Another notable technique used in verbal analysis of lie detection is the reality monitoring technique." @default.
